Find Out About Federal Funds For Schools For Panic Devices

Are You Aware - Schools across the country can get up to $200,000 in federal funds to buy panic buttons that would alert law enforcement of an emergency faster. Now that school is out for the summer, it's a good time to check into what funding is available. New technology can be used to safeguard our kids before a threat happens.

Tucked away in the omnibus spending bill that President Donald Trump signed Friday was language that allows for Department of Justice grants to pay for schools to buy devices similar to the panic buttons that are in banks.

The Department of Justice would cover 75 percent of the cost of the devices initial installation up to $200,000, which is what Illinois Congressman Mike Bosts office, who wrote the original bill, said is the approximate cost for the systems. Total costs would vary depending on the size of the district. Some security systems require a phone connection to maintain a communication between it and law enforcement. The DOJ grant would not help with that cost, according to the laws language.

Legislators in Illinois like Bost, a Belleville Republican and former first responder himself, told House members that the technology would give first responders valuable time to address an unfolding emergency.

We already have panic buttons to protect investments in our banks, he said in March. Theres no greater investment in the country than our children.

Rep. Brad Schneider, D-Deerfield, supported the bill. He said that it will make school safer for students.

The technology will ensure students and teachers will have a more immediate method of notifying law enforcement and first responders in case of a medical emergency, an active school shooter incident or natural disaster, he said.

Intentional misuse of the panic buttons, similar to misuse of fire alarms, would be handled by local officials, Bost's office said.

Credential Based Systems

Electronic Access Control has undergone dramatic change since its early adoption in the mid 1970s. Today credential based systems with keys, cards, tokens or even transmitter are considered state of the art and worth the price of admission or not as the case may be. The good news is that you can benefit from this change. This article deals with the underlying technologies available from your existing suppliers.

What is Access Control? - Access Control systems consist of doors, gates or portals, that are normally operated by mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic or electromechanical hardware. The process is controlled by credential, knowledge, or some unique biological characteristic. Your knowledge of these fine products means you will definitely stay ahead of the curve and keep your family and customers safe.

What Are Credential Based Security Systems? - Credential based systems use keys, cards, tokens, or transmitters. This market segment has seen rapid development in the last few years. Knowledge based systems use something known very similar to a password or PIN number. Biometrics currently include voice, hand or finger print, retina or iris scan, signature dynamics, facial recognition, hand geometry, keystroke dynamics and blood vessel patterns. Dizzy yet? There's more. Recent biometric developments allow some fingerprint and facial recognition systems to rapidly make reliable sub-dermal measurements below the skins surface. Yes and many companies that require that level of security are already in place and are worth every penny.

Brief History Of Access Control:

Traditional types of electronic access control were usually dominated by Continental Instruments Cypher Lock with two-position rocker switches. These were extremely popular in military and Department of Defense applications since the fingers were concealed during operation.

Next came what we still accept as the norm. The Hirsch Scramblepad became the high security standard. The lighted LEDs were displayed in different positions each time accessed, and could only be viewed from directly ahead, making over-shoulder viewing nearly impossible. Later versions added the HID proximity card, allowing dual validation.

Magnetic stripes were first applied to a card for access control tests by IBM in 1960. The card was very simple, thin, cheap and quickly encoded. Adding an employee name and photo increased the cards utility for EAC applications. Later the 3-track cards were introduced to allow more data, and high-coercivity stripes with a more robust magnetic field. Thus we had a new the standard. Major drawbacks were magnetic stripe degradation from abrasive dirt and sand, limited data storage ability, and ease of duplication. Not to mention budget line items were required to keep this technology current.

The Proximity Card was first brought to the U.S. market by the late USAF Lt. Col. Noel S. Alton and a business partner in the early 70s. The cards contained early contactless read-only technology that was unaffected by rain, dust, or most weather conditions. The startup company was acquired by Schlage Lock Company, and soon gained significant market penetration. Although the technology was reliable, weatherproof, and impressive, the high cost of cards, controller, and cabling, the proprietary architecture, and closed distribution system, limited growth.

The Wiegand-effect card was next and was developed by German-born John R. Wiegand. The inventor refined the process with Echlin Corporation in the 1970s, as a means to trigger automotive ignition pulses. EAC applications soon followed. The readers durability, low cost and the cards strong resistance to counterfeiting allowed the technology to dominate the industry for nearly 20 years. The readers three-wire data protocol became the access control industry standard. Other historic card technologies include bar codes, Hall-effect, Barium Ferrite, Infra red optical, electrical circuits, and Hollerith (optical patterns). Various limitations have prevented each of these from becoming mainstream.

Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) chips have been used for inventory and retail loss-prevention for some time. And for some like Walmart and Sam's Clubs, is the only pallet inventory accepted as a vendor. The gold plated contact type electronic tag can have six or eight segment contacts like your current credit card, whereas the contactless type is not visible on the surface. These RFID chips have been inserted under skin for animal identification for several years, and recent tests have been done on humans.

RFID devices can be active battery-powered or passive read-only chips. The early low frequency chips typically operate at 125 KHz at short range, while the much faster high frequency chips run at 13.56 MHz, with read ranges available to several feet. Ultra High Frequency (UHF) RFID systems can operate from 856 to 960 MHz and can be sometimes read from 25 to 75-feet away, depending on transmission power and antennae. This latter type lends itself to vehicle gate operation and high speed toll collection applications.

The Near Field Communication (NFC) version of RFID operates at 13.56 MHz as a peer-to-peer communication device. NFC is currently used on smart phones for data transfer. NFC can use inductive current from the reader to power the transmission process from the chip. Operational distance of only 1 inches make NFC ideal for contactless payment, banking and some access control applications.

As we moved into the twentieth century, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE or Bluetooth Smart) 4.0 with its much faster 2.4 GHz speed, high capacity and selectable transmission distance, appears to have achieved overwhelming acceptance in the access control field and many retail applications. BLE technology can operate as a read-only device, or for peer-to-peer data transfer like NFC, only much faster. BLE is easily applied to your mobile credential (smart phone) with a simple software profiling action.

Multi-Technology cards were introduced to facilitate customer migration from earlier magnetic stripes, and from 125 KHz RFID Prox cards to the faster, high frequency 13.56 MHz. This allows customers to continually upgrade systems without wholesale disruption or the high cost of replacing readers.

Dormakabas Swiss-based Legic Identsystems introduced the first 13.56 MHz access control cards while Netherlands-based NXP corporation was developing the 13.56 MHz RFID MIFare system for fare collection and later, the encrypted DESFire protocol. This open architecture technology is now generally available on multi-technology cards.

Dual Validation protocols have been in force for some time with card and PIN numbers. Reliable performance of the on-board fingerprint reader is now allowing biometric verification to become a secure validation process. Since critical infrastructure, military, and high security operations are now requiring dual validation access controls, there will be considerable growth in this area.

Biometric enabled cards are now offered by Norway based Zwipe company. The on-card fingerprint reader verifies that the person using the card is indeed the one identified in the encrypted data. This technical advance is likely to have a profound effect on criminal use of credit cards, and access to bank accounts. The biometric card allows dual validation, along with the powerful encryption. An energy harvesting process uses inductive current from NFC readers to power the fingerprint reader.

These biometric cards are compatible with HID, Legic, and MIfare/DESFire systems in use around the world. Battery powered versions can also operate with legacy low-power 125 KHz prox readers without upgrading your customers infrastructure. Gemalto, Oberthur, SmartMatrix and others are building cards similar to Zwipes payment card. Be sure to specify correctly.

Global Net Solutions (GNS) of Torrance, CA has announced an IoT based biometric card called the S-Badge. The card uses AI and machine learning strategies that provides access control, tracks people on site, and provides an onboard panic button.

The major American success story has been HID, a company that cooperated with others in a win win process with open architecture designs available to all.

Hughes Identification Devices has been a major American success story. The company was formed in 1991 by Hughes Aircraft Co. to develop RFID technologies for tracking aircraft parts. When acquired by Palomar Technological, the companys name was changed to HID and it began to focus on 125MHz RFID cards for physical access control applications.

HID was acquired by ASSA ABLOY in 2001, and they completed transition from first generation 125 KHz prox cards to 13.56 MHz RFID iCLASS cards and readers. This second generation higher frequency technology allowed rapid two-way communication with mutual authentication for improved security.

A third generation iCLASS SE card has Secure Identity Objects with the user identity encrypted, encapsulated, and signed. SIO provides multiple layers of protection, with the individuals encrypted data at the core, wrapped in an encrypted digital signature to authenticate proof of identity and that it is not altered. This content is then wrapped, bound to the device, and signed, yielding a Trusted Identity Platform (TIP).

The fourth generation called iCLASS Seos provides multiple encrypted databases within the credential. To communicate with a given database, the reader must have the proper key.

The growing HID company singularly focused on providing cards and readers for access control manufacturers, integrators, dealers and installers. The open architecture cooperative strategy has allowed dramatic growth with HID dominating the Americas markets. The growing list of business partners in the U.S., Europe and other areas is an impressive business success story in itself.

Along the way, the company acquired card manufacturer Indala, the leading card printer manufacturer Fargo, and recently the Lumidigm multi-spectral fingerprint reader company. ASSA ABLOY is also the parent company of Sargent, Corbin Russwin, and Yale lock companies, which offer the full range of card technologies. Allegion and Best as well as most access control system suppliers also offer this open architecture technology.

Legic Identsystems division of dormakaba is another major player in the European market with increasing connections in North America, including Best. Legics encryption of the data and transport process puts firewalls between information from various applications or regions. BMW for example, runs 21 separate applications on a single Legic credenial.

Farpointe Data of Sunnyvale, CA offers cards and credentials, including long range applications for gate and high speed toll collection with Legic, HID, and MIfare/DESFire systems. Whew! Right now, after this somewhat long history lesson we are current. Peace of mind with all options state of the art is the best it can be. Unlike the time lock, which unlocks at a preset time (as in the case of a bank vault), a time-delay locks operate each time the safe is unlocked. The operator must wait for the set delay period to elapse before the lock can be opened. These types of time delay safes are most commonly used in businesses with high cash transactions like pharmacies, pawn shops, convenience stores, and banks in highly visable public locations and the like. They can also be used in banks like Nationwide, HSBC and Halifax.

In the world of security, a time-delay combination lock is frequently incorporated into money safes as an armed robbery deterrent. Time-delay combination locks are also equipped with a duress code which may be entered to activate the time delay whilst sending a silent alarm to a monitoring centre.

Form and function of a modern time delay combination lock has many uses such as multiple different codes, pre-set time lock settings (open and close times), pre-set vacation times (e.g. Christmas Day), dual code facility, and a full audit trail providing a detailed record of the lock history showing who opened the lock, when and how long it was open.

These products also use a non-volatile memory so that no information is lost if the batteries go flat. This will allow the safe to be opened when the batteries are changed after the pre-set time if the correct code is entered. Some electronic combination locks with a time-delay feature require the code to be entered twice: once to start the timer, and a second to unlock and open the safe entered after the delay period has expired.

This festive holiday season is the busiest time of the year for elves and reindeers, but also for thieves. Some recent surveys revealed that on New Year's Day alone, theft claims increase by 8% A recent Aviva survey revealed that on New Year’s Eve household theft claims increase by 8%. Believe it and with electronics and new digital and computer based applications being the most stolen items; iPhones, laptops and notebook tablets/iPads are really at the top of thieves’ wish lists. Texas Safe & Lock wants to remind everyone to do all you can to prevent theft. Practical things you may not have considered are simple, and can make a big difference this year.

Texas Safe & Lock has spoken to many experts in security and asked them for their top tips to help you keep your home and valuables safe this holiday. We want to share what we learned.

Do Make your home, business, or cabin less attractive to thieves. ‘Consider using external dusk till dawn lights and other visual deterrents including alarms and CCTV cameras (as burglars don’t want to be seen),’ says Steffan George, Director of Business Development at the Master Locksmiths Association ’If you are staying away from your property, make it look like the house is still occupied with lights on timers and a fake TV upstairs. These can act as good deterrents. We highly recommend adding professionally installed high quality locks to doors and windows and consider securing your outbuildings with tools safely stored away.’ By spending a little on a lock that is old and easily picked, you can deter unwanted theives who won't take to time to try to gain access.

Be sure to protect your valuables. Never never never, leave any thing of value in plain sight. Especially from open windows if curtains or blinds stay open. You need to not advertise those gifts you may have received. Consider a safe, professionaly specified and installed by us of course. What better way to hide from site, a safe that only you remember where it is. Lock all doors, windows, gates, pool areas, garages, and keep them locked, even when you are home. Keys should be kept at all times out of sight in a safe place and out of a letter box in the door at the entry for sure.

Remove new presents from under the tree to a safe location not visible from doors or windows. Most police recommend not leaving a welcoming invitation to any burgler. All gift wrapping papers, bows, ribbons, and trash from entertaining a thief who may check out your garbage can to see what's new they can lift easily.

Refrain from pictures, postings, tweets, and the like from all social media about new gifts you or your family received. Most importantly if you will be leaving for the entire Holiday Season...make it look like you are still there. Leave lights on timers, maybe even make sure no one except those who will take in your mail or watch a pet know you will even be gone.

Fraud and Internet thieves are certainly rampant right now. Phones, laptops, computers, garage remotes, thermostats and etc. can be hacked. Change passwords to extreme type with plenty of numbers, and of great length to annoy any would be attackers. Hackers, malware and theives are out there. Do all you can to learn about how to protect all your data in whatever capacity you can.

A special word from Andrei Petrus, Product Manager of Avira Antivirus Security for Android, shared his expertise. He says that an essential all-round security safety net for mobile devices looks like this:

‘An antivirus protection to stay ashore and safe from the plethora of threats that exist on the mobile realm: malware that might spy on you, steal personal information, send SMS to premium numbers, render your phone unusable.’ You will also need ‘a web protection to make sure you don't fall prey to phishing attacks or dodgy practices that cyber crooks adopt in order to steal information you'd usually exchange only with trusted websites, such as banks.’ And finally ’the possibility to lock certain apps behind an additional layer of protection. You might hand your phone to friends and colleagues sometimes when they want to make a call, but make sure that your messages / photos / browser history are inaccessible to them.’

A special note about how to keep your personal information safe. A phone theft means first access the web dashboard from your security solution provider, push a recovery alert on the device and try to identify its location on a map. Could be that you forgot it somewhere and whomever found it will read the message and call you back to return it. If that is not the case, but you see it moving on the map, proceed with a Remote Wipe command. It's important that your private information is immediately erased from a phone that's not your property anymore. Once you’re certain you have been the victim of a theft, report the incident at the police station.

Of great importance is to make sure you use the Remote Wipe option so that the thief doesn’t get access to the private information stored on your phone. While recovering the device might become a duty of the police, you have to make sure you protect your personal data even when your phone is no longer in your possession.

Traditionally, on-the-job training has been a primary method of learning locksmithing skills. Trainees work with experienced locksmiths until they have mastered the necessary skills. In some on-the-job training programs, employees attend demonstrations or receive classroom as well as practical training. The length of time necessary to complete on-the-job training ranges from three months to four years, depending on the level of expertise required for a given sector of the profession. Completion of courses at a locksmithing school will provide a basic knowledge of the trade and may shorten the length of the on-the-job training programs.
Continuing education for the locksmith is provided by seminars and classes presented by lock manufacturers, locksmithing schools and locksmith associations, including the Associated Locksmiths of America.

Boat owners here in the Texoma Region who need state of the art locks, padlocks, and shackle making type products hit high marks with Practical Boat Owner magazine this past month. The ABUS Diskus 24IB/50 was one of the twelve padlocks tested by 'Practical Boat Owner' magazine with padlocks supplied by online specialist Nothing But Padlocks. The PBO tests were conducted to determine the "best padlock" for marine environments, taking account of cost, corrosion, strength, durability and consequent security.

The full test can be seen on line at www.pbo.co.uk The padlocks were placed in a saltwater spray tank for a month to simulate a year of normal use, then removed and tested with keys for function and examined externally for corrosion and rust. Once passing this test the padlocks were then attacked with 18" bolt croppers to determine a level of time attack resistance.

The Diskus 24IB padlock passed all tests with honours. Remaining unaffected by corrosion in the salt tank, it then proved to be extremely difficult to attack with bolt croppers. Eventually a hacksaw had to be used to remove the padlock, taking a total of 8 minutes, far surpassing any competitors' products. The Diskus 24IB is described by PBO as "optimum protection due to its shape which minimises the visible shackle making it harder to attack" and "it was unaffected by corrosion in the tank and proved very difficult to break in".

Debuts Kwikset HomeKit-Compatible Premis Smart Door Lock

Premis joins Kwiksets Kevo Smart Lock at the CES for 2016 with the launch of it's first HomeKit-compatible product. Joining the Schlage Sense, the Premis is one of two smart locks available that work with Apple's HomeKit platform. This versitle platform can be used in Scenes and Trigger along with other HomeKit products. Able to respont to Siri voice commands, you now have voice control over a home or business front door lock.

"Kwikset closely listens to feedback and monitors new technologies to develop products that meet consumer needs," said Keith Brandon, Vice President of Residential Access Solutions, Kwikset. "Premis was specifically developed to work with Apple HomeKit, a simple and secure smart home technology we truly believe in and are excited to support."

Another great feature is the ability to pair HomeKit Premis with a third-generation Apple TV or later. Premis also has an app that can be used to schedule guest codes for specific times, and lets users keep an eye on lock status, check battery life, and you can receive notifications when the lock is used. It's never been so easy to be away with eyes on capability.

The Premis design features an LED display and capacitive touchscreen that's used to input guest codes, plus there's a standard keyhole for manual operation. Premis runs on four AA batteries and Kwikset says installation can be done with a screwdriver and a ruler.

If you’re considering buying a smart door lock, let Texas Safe and Lock review your options. There are two main types available: locks that connect to your home Internet connection via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-only locks. Wi-Fi locks offer more functions but are inherently less safe because they’re always connected to the Internet. Bluetooth-only locks offer more security, but at the expense of features. Remember Bluetooth also tends to cause a lot of minor but annoying lag in the unlocking process if you are in a hurry.

August Smart Lock - The August Smart Lock is a very popular lock option currently available. It’s smart enough to know when you’re coming and going, knowing not to unlock the door if you’re passing by it inside your house. While the base August lock is Bluetooth only, the optional connect adds on Wi-FI like remote buzz ins, and real time unlock alerts. Powered by 4AA Batteries, battery alerts are sent to the phone when needed. As of January 2015, it also works tihe Nest and is certified. Lockitron Bolt - The Lockitron Bolt is the least expensive smart door lock on our list. The Bluetooth-only lock, which replaces your existing deadbolt lock, offers the basics, sensing your approach and automatically unlocking for you when you arrive home. It’s a really great option for renters, as the physical lock’s setting can be easily matched to any key. You can add on the optional Lockitron Bridge for Wi-Fi functionality. This allows the device to deliver real time unlockg alerts. The Lockitron Bolt will be available in Satin Nickel and Polished Brass finishes as a public beta device when the preview device launches later this month. A production variants will be available in various finishes later this year.
Goji Smart Lock - Truly packed with features, the Goji Smart Lock has its own on-lock welcome screen. The Goji works both via Bluetooth for smartphone and fob proximity unlocking and via Wi-Fi for remote control functionality. Kwikset SmartKey - Have you heard yet about the Kwikset SmartKey? Kwikset’s new technology in this lock is really going the distance. By proving itself not only to be the most secure, but also giving an added value by allowing you to re-key the lock easily, it is fast becoming the best way to secure doors, sheds, boats, bikes and the like. Since last years, Kwikset has done an excellent job in upgrading this once questionalbe lock and now rates by many as the best lock on the market for its class. One stipulation however, if you already have this lock on your door, and it’s older than a year or two, I would hurry and buy a new one, to make sure you get a lock without the old flaws.
Kwikset SmartKey Logo - The Schlage deadbolt, and most new Schlage locks are excellent new technology if you want a classic pin-tumbler lock. Many locksmiths are reporting that they don't seem to be able to compromise these locks by picking or raking drilling. The sturdy, bigger bolt makes it very difficult to open, and drilling is only with specifics used.
